Description
To explain this painting:
1) the animals on here(oarfish, kangaroo, Komodo dragon, and platypus) are all real animals.
2) These animals used to be legends, such as the kangaroo. The Aborigines in Australia knew of them and told stories about them. When the Europeans arrived in Australia, they thought that these stories were not true and a that an animal with a "head like a deer, that stood like men, and hopped like frogs" did not exist until they saw them. When they went back to Europe and told people about them, they thought they were just "travelers' tails." The oarfish, for many years, was thought to be a sea serpent(they are deep sea animals so not many have been seen in their natural habitat, they only surface when they are dying or dead). Sailors would see the dead oarfish floating and assumed it was a sea serpent(they are very big, usually about ten feet long).
Same kind of thing happened with the Komodo dragon and the platypus.
3) Hence the writing on the paint: Some legends are real.
